AI website builder or an agency: an honest answer for 2026
AI builders produce a website in an afternoon and cover about 60 percent of the job. The remaining 40 percent, conversion, SEO and integrations, is what brings inquiries.

The honest answer for 2026: an AI website builder covers about 60 percent of the work around a website, and it is the 60 percent you can see, the look, the copy, going live in a single afternoon. The remaining 40 percent, turning visitors into inquiries, the SEO that brings people in and the integrations with the tools you use, stays with you or with somebody who does it professionally. And that 40 percent is what pays the bills.
We would write this differently if our job were to defend a price. But builders really are good at what they were made for, and admitting that is the only honest way to start a comparison.
What an AI builder does brilliantly
You describe your company in a couple of sentences and within minutes you have a website: structure, copy, images, colors. It is fast and cheap. Tool reviews, such as the one from Zapier, confirm the lightning start at a price of 10 to 40 euros a month, so for testing an idea, for a site that has to exist by tomorrow or for a single service on a single page, it is a perfectly legitimate choice.
Honestly: if you just need the site to exist, a builder is enough. You do not need an agency to have your opening hours and phone number on the internet.
Before you commit, though, check what happens to the site if you stop paying the monthly plan. With most builders the site goes dark, and the content exports partially or not at all. A site you rent is not an asset. It is worth knowing that at the start, while the decision still costs nothing.
Where it stops: the 40 percent that brings inquiries
The problems start when the site has to do real work rather than merely exist:
- Conversion: generic copy along the lines of “welcome to our website” convinces nobody to call. The order of sections, the trust signals and the calls to action are not generated, they are thought through.
- SEO: a builder arranges pages its own way, not around what your customers type into Google. Structuring pages around real searches is work the tool cannot see.
- Integrations: connecting to invoicing software, bookings, a CRM. This is where builders either stop or charge for a more expensive plan.
- Measurement: who came, from where, what they did. Without it you have no idea whether the site works.
All four share a common denominator: none of them is visible at first glance. A builder site and a site that brings inquiries look like two cars in the same color, one of which has no engine. The difference only shows when you need to get somewhere.
An example from the SEO side: a builder generates headings like “Welcome” and “Our services,” while customers type “washing machine hose replacement cost.” A page whose heading repeats the customer question beats a prettier page without it, every time.

A five minute test: have you outgrown your builder?
Open your website and answer three questions. How many inquiries did it bring last month? Where do you rank on Google for your main service and city? Does the copy on the home page sound like you or like any company on earth? Do not know the first answer? You have no measurement. Below the first page? You have no SEO. And copy that could just as easily sit on a competitor site means the customer has no reason at all to pick you.
How design and rankings pull each other along is something we wrote about in our article on the relationship between UX and SEO. The short version: a visitor who leaves immediately is a signal that costs you rankings too.
You can set up measurement yourself in an afternoon. Google Search Console is free and shows where you rank and what people actually type, and it is the first tool we recommend to everyone, on a builder or not. Three minutes, three answers, and you know where you stand.
The hybrid that wins
This is not a choice between two camps. A perfectly good path: start on a builder while you test the business, and once inquiries get serious, move the site onto a foundation that grows with you. We build that foundation on the React and Next.js stack, for reasons that can be measured: speed, security and the freedom to add whatever the business asks for tomorrow.
The reverse happens too. A share of our clients come to us straight from builder sites, with the same sentence: the site has existed for two years, the inquiries have not. The site was not a mistake then, the builder was a good first step, but a step is not a journey. Migrating does not mean throwing everything away either: the copy, the photos and any structure that works get carried over, and page addresses get redirected so nothing Google already remembers is lost.
How to decide, without our help
A builder: when you are testing an idea, when the budget is under 500 euros, when the site serves as a business card. An agency: when you live off inquiries from the site, when you advertise and every click costs money, when you need connections to other tools. In our services the website, SEO and advertising work as one system, and that is the difference no builder can offer even on its most expensive plan: somebody is accountable for the result. Every month, in a report. There is also the question of time: the hour you spend every week patching a site in a builder is an hour you bill to nobody.
